General Information

Your Safari

Each safari is individually planned to meet your exact requirements, so please ensure that you complete our client questionnaire, which will be sent to you prior to your safari. We recommend 7 – 14 days for plains game hunting safaris, 10 – 21 days for dangerous game hunting safaris and 3 – 7 days for bird hunting safaris. We recommend that advanced bookings are done for all safaris and we are advised of the species required. This is essential to secure your booking and to prepare the safari to your specifications. You will need a valid passport to enter South Africa. South Africa does not require an entry visa.

Travel

You will be responsible for your own travel arrangements, prior and following your safari, from your country to your point of entry into Africa, in addition to any internal flights necessary for your safari. SES will inform you of what internal flights are necessary. Most of our Eastern Cape safaris start and end at East London airport. Stormberg Elangeni Safaris would be happy to assist you in making any travel arrangements. We can highly recommend Gracy Travel as your travel agent to South Africa.

Firearms

South Africa requires a temporary import/export permit for your firearms and ammunition. This can be issued at your port of entry into South Africa or applied for before you arrive in South Africa. To make this as hassle free as possible, SES will send you an application form for your temporary import/export firearm permit. This is known as a SAP 520 form. SES will also send you firearm importation procedures prior to your safari. PHASA (Professional Hunters Association of South Africa) offers an Airport Assistance service to ensure a smooth entry through customs with your firearms, details are sent to you prior to your safari and remember, automatic weapons are illegal in South Africa.

For any of the “Big Five” the law requires a minimum caliber of 375. For plains game any caliber from 270 upwards will be suitable. Shots range from close quarters in thick bushy conditions, to fairly long shots up to 300 yards in open plains, so a good variable scope is recommended. For bird shooting, a 12-gauge shotgun is recommended. We can supply shotgun shells for bird hunts. Firearms can be hired by prior arrangement.

Hunting Permits & Licenses

    • All plains game trophy fees for South Africa include hunting licenses
    • Some species require CITES permits
    • We will assist you in obtaining these once your safari is booked and confirmed
    • Hunting permits are required in some provinces and will be issued to you by your Professional Hunter, which are currently free of charge
